Behind the desk is Burke Reid, who recently produced many of Oh Mercy’s favourite albums (The Drones, Jack Ladder, Wolf & Cub). Reid and Oh Mercy bonded on the streets of Toronto, Canada prior to meeting again in the studio space last week to commence work capturing the new songs.
“We are drinking a lot of beer, eating heaps of meat, listening to the Bee Gees and maintaining excellent hygiene” says lead singer and songwriter, Alexander Gow.
The yet to be titled third album is scheduled for release later this year, with new music to emerge over the coming months.
OH MERCY were easily one of the most talked about independent Australian bands buzzing at SxSW this year.
In-between showcase performances for Sonicbids, HGTV, Liveset and the Aussie BBQ, Oh Mercy found time to perform an early morning acoustic set for Balcony TV Austin.
Having sold out their first Melbourne album launch, Margins quickly announced, then sold out their second Divide album launch show. Quickly followed by selling out their Sydney launch, packing their Brisbane in store & Adelaide show to the ceiling.
Having honed their live performances accompanying an eclectic range of projected films; from Jess Franco to Return of the Jedi, Margins embrace subtlety and restraint as their modus operandi continue to enact a spacious and sublime style of instrumentation.
There is also new territory to be explored, including maidenly haunting vocals from Jess Cornelius (Teeth and Tongue), drums and percussion by Dan McKay (The Nation Blue), swirling lap steel by Chris Rainier and keys reduced to hypnotic wash from the deftly understated Matt Bailey. Added to this are acoustic guitars, unobtrusive loops, glockenspiel and aquatic shades of ambient sound.
Divide presents a series of atmospheres and aural landscapes that united carry the listener to a highly personal and ultimately unique destination.
Divide is out now through Casadeldisco Records / MGM.
Ice Station video clip produced by Spod: watch here and now!
Perth tour dates will be announced soon.
“Simple Man” is taken from Georgia Fair’s critically acclaimed debut album All Through Winter produced by Bill Reynolds and recorded in the snow-covered mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.
Lyrically “Simple Man” is a song for every person, it describes the internal battles and fears which confront us all. Jordan points to “that feeling of wanting to just up and leave to escape all of your problems, yet knowing it’s the fear inside you that’s the real thing you’re trying to fight”.
The video was directed by Shane McLafferty (Stevie Nicks, Mick Jagger) and filmed in Los Angeles including the same location as the film ‘Drive’. The narrative follows a man as he tries to “find himself” through flashes of memory; characters and landscapes familiar yet strange.
Since the release of their ‘All Through Winter’ album Georgia Fair has been busy touring across Australia; most recently with The Panics and Busby Marou, and are now announced as special guests on the Lisa Mitchell ‘Heavenly Sounds’ tour.
Georgia Fair’s live performances have been described as “mesmerizing. Intense and at times heartbreaking” (Tone Deaf) and now the duo’s glorious harmonies and epic songwriting will reach new heights in the Heavenly Sounds tour of churches and cathedrals.
Following in the footsteps of Seeker Lover Keeper, Lisa Mitchell has announced the Heavenly Sounds tour to launch her new single ‘Spiritus’, she will be joined on stage by her band, choir and as she states “the darling men of Georgia Fair will be kicking off the evening with their floating harmonies! What an incredible tour we have to look forward to.’

“Simple Man” is taken from Georgia Fair’s critically acclaimed debut album All Through Winter produced by Bill Reynolds and recorded in the snow-covered mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.
When producer Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses) set about recording ‘Simple man’ he suggested it should be recorded live; bringing an intensity to the track which would help capture the full emotional power of the song.
Ben explains “Bill told us to rock out. As I put the electric guitar on it, we both saw room for that song to move.” To add to the atmospherics Jordan recorded his vocals in the studio bathroom. “It’s the secret of a good song” chuckles Ben.
Lyrically “Simple Man” is a song for every man or woman. It describes the internal battles and fears which confront us all. Jordan points to “that feeling of wanting to just up and leave to escape all of your problems, yet knowing it’s the fear inside you that’s the real thing you’re trying to fight”.
Since the release of the album Georgia Fair has been busy covering many miles touring; most recently with The Panics and Busby Marou. Tone Deaf described their performance as “memorising. Intense and at times heartbreaking” and certainly not to be missed.

Melbourne instrumental four-piece Margins present their second full-length album, Divide. Following from 2008’s acclaimed self-titled debut, Divide sees the band continue to enact a spacious and sublime style of instrumentation. Having honed their live performances accompanying an eclectic range of projected films; from Jess Franco to Return of the Jedi, Margins embrace subtlety and restraint as their modus operandi, challenging assumptions that a band must near explode to make an impact.
As its title may suggest, Divide was written in a variety of different spaces. Some unlikely, such as a disused television studio, others personal, lounge rooms, sheds and patios creating a pre-lived in mood. Other spaces, including the recording studio itself, invoke and engage the raw nerve of improvisation. Indeed much of Divide is experiment in motion, the live nature of the recording allowing the band to write and perform simultaneously, whilst choosing between numerous unique versions of each song. The final cuts allow the listener to enter the band’s world; nothing is hidden here – mistakes and once-off magic are all present, including the squeaking of chairs and shuffling of feet. Rather than retreat from peripheral sounds traditionally outlawed, Margins offer themselves up to be interpreted on the listener’s terms.
This is a soundtrack for thought, relaxation, inspiration and space. Margins will not force you to love them; they will not pummel you into submission. You need not belong to a scene nor possess knowledge of their musical peers in order to be immersed. Margins’ tact is wholly different. Their music exists quite contentedly outside of genre and refuses to comply with time or trend.
Casadeldisco Records, home to Harmony, Oh Mercy and The Nation Blue, are proud to release the Margins ‘Divide’ album on March 16, 2012.
